Reframe Stress: Embrace the 10/90 Rule

Here’s the truth: Stress is unavoidable.

We can’t control the events and situations that come our way, but what we can control, and what I’d argue is more important, is HOW we respond to these different situations.

If you’ve read his book, you’ll know that Stephen Covey, a highly respected thought leader, introduced a powerful concept: 10% of life is what happens to us, and 90% is how we respond to it.

This is an invitation to reevaluate our reactions to the uncontrollable events in our lives.

Here’s how you can start implementing this concept:

When stress comes, pause and rethink your approach. Ask yourself: Can I see this differently?

Often, a slight change in perspective can significantly lighten the load of stress.

It’s about focusing on what you can control – your actions, your mindset, and your responses – and building a mindset centered on resilience.

🍃 Incorporate breathwork into your day.

A few minutes of controlled breathing can be incredibly grounding, acting as a quick reset when stress levels rise.

🏃♂️ Add movement to your daily routine.

Whether it’s a brisk walk, stretching, or yoga, physical activity is a strong counter to stress.

📖 Embrace journaling as a path to clarity.

It’s not just about jotting down what happens each day; it’s a means to introspection and stress relief. Writing your thoughts and feelings can help you understand and reframe stressful experiences.

The 10/90 Rule reminds us that while we can’t control every aspect of life, we have a lot of power over how we react.

By embracing positive thinking and proactive responses, we can transform our relationship with stress, leading to a healthier, more balanced existence.
